FAQs

The CPA Exam, or Uniform CPA Examination, is a professional licensing exam for accountants in the United States. It is designed to ensure candidates have the knowledge and skills required to protect the public and provide high-quality accounting services. The exam is administered by NASBA and created by the AICPA.

Eligibility depends on your state board of accountancy, but typical requirements include:

  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field

  • 150 semester credit hours of education (some states allow candidates to sit with fewer hours initially)

  • Completion of specific accounting and business courses

You must:

  1. Verify eligibility with your state board

  2. Submit your application and transcripts

  3. Pay the exam fees

  4. Receive your Notice to Schedule (NTS)

  5. Schedule your exam at a Prometric Testing Center

The CPA Exam consists of four main sections:

  1. AUD – Auditing and Attestation

  2. FAR – Financial Accounting and Reporting

  3. REG – Regulation

  4. BEC – Business Environment and Concepts (or the new discipline exams under CPA Evolution: BAR, ISC, TCP)

Each section is 4 hours long and tests specific accounting and business skills.

  • Each section is scored 0–99, with 75 as the passing score.

  • Scores are based on a combination of multiple-choice questions, task-based simulations, and written communication tasks (for BEC).

  • Each exam section is scored independently, so failing one section does not affect the others.

  • AUD: ~50%

  • FAR: ~45%

  • REG: ~55%

  • BEC/Disciplines: ~60%

Pass rates vary each quarter. Consistent study, practice, and strategy significantly increase your chances of passing.

Candidates must pass all four sections within 18 months of passing the first section. If you fail to complete within this timeframe, the first passed section expires, and you must retake it.

Yes. Some exam sections are offered at international Prometric testing centers. International candidates may also need to verify education credentials through NASBA’s International Evaluation Services (NIES).
